Delete…Delete…..Delete already!! (Vista Woes)

Recently I took upon myself a task that under Windows XP would have been a no-brainer, 5 minute ordeal. The task was simple. Delete a backup folder that was taking up too much space…on Vista. Now since Vista decided to think that it’s super secure, it asks you a thousand times if you’re sure that you want to do something. After what seemed like hours of giving access permissions, deleting, telling Vista i was sure I wanted to delete it, then re-telling it I was sure, then getting an error and giving more permissions, and so on and so forth, I was distraught. However, as usual, a simple google search supplied the answer. This was taken off a forum and I’m too lazy to search for due credit and since my blog doesn’t yield to much traffic i’m not too worried about it Anyways, here’s the instructions for deleting a backup folder on Windows Vista:

1. Right click on folder (Context menu appears.)
2. Select “Properties” (“[Folder Name] Properties” dialog appears.)
3. Click the “Security” tab.
4. Click “Advanced” button (Advanced Security Settings for [Folder Name] appears.)
5. Click “Owner” tab.
6. Click “Edit” button.
7. Click new owner’s name in “Change owner to” box.
8. Click box to check “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects”.
9. Click “Apply” button. (“Changing ownership of…” progress message appears.)
10. Click “Yes” to acknowledge “Windows Security” warning.
11. Click OK to close topmost “Advanced Security Settings” dialog.
12. Click “Permissions” tab (first tab) on current “Advanced Security Settings” dialog.
13. Click “Edit” button.
14. Click to select the Administrator in the “Permission Entries” box.
15. NOTE: If “Administrator” appears more than once, select the one that has “Subfolders and files only” in the “Apply To” column.
16. Click Edit button. (“Permission Entry for [Folder Name]” dialog appears.)
17. Click to check “Apply these permissions to objects…” option.
18. Click to check ALL the boxes in the “Allow” column.
19. Click “OK” (Dialog box closes, return to “Advance Security Settings” dialog.)
20. Click to check “Include inheritable permissions…” option.
21. Click to check “Replace all existing inheritable permissions…” option.
22. Click “Apply” button. (“Windows Security” confirmation dialog appears.)
23. Click “Yes” to confirm that you wish to continue.
24. Watch progress indicator on the “Windows Security: Setting security information…” dialog.
25. When all security information has been applied, the progress indicator dialog will close automatically.
26. You are now at the “Advanced Security Settings for [Folder Name]” dialog box… the “Permissions” tab should be visible.
27. Click “OK” and the dialog box closes, revealing the previous dialog box.
28. Click “OK” and the dialog box closes, revealing the “Properties” dialog box.
29. Click “OK” and the “Properties” dialog box closes.
30. Return to Windows Explorer and delete the folder.

And that’s it! Only 30 steps to delete a folder, nice Vista. Not only does this double as useful information to readers, but it’s useful information that I have stored somewhere for me

Laptops in 2015

I just thought I’d share some of these pictures from an article that talked about innovations in laptops for the coming years. (EDIT: Here) Check these out: (Keep in mind they’re only concepts, but still cool and innovative nonetheless)

This one’s a slide up laptop. Think of it like the Chocolate phone by Verizon or others..I own a chocolate so I’m not familiar with any of the other brands It’s 3 quarters of an inch thick. The lower panel functions as either a keyboard or a scribble pad.

This laptop is a dual touch screen monitor system. The upper screen is apparently used for viewing applications and the lower screen is for typing, drawing, jotting notes, etc. According to the designer, the laptop changes functions depending on how it’s held. For example, open it all the way and it’s a sketch pad (upper left picture); open it halfway and rotate it, and it’s used like an ebook (lower left picture); when it’s flat on the table, it can be used as a piano.

The following laptop “can be carried around by its handle, positioned like an easel or placed on a car’s steering wheel. When the car’s not in motion, the Cario can project maps, video conferences and more onto the windshield.”

The last laptop here is a solar powered system. Apparently this one as it stands now is still having trouble getting enough power to it, but the idea behind keeping the devices powered for any kind of user is intriguing.

First and foremost, if you’re still using Internet Explorer and not Firefox, for the love of God man…switch already. Anyways, tonight (or this morning since it’s after midnight) I stumbled upon an addon for Firefox called Fasterfox. I live on campus currently and the internet’s usually fast enough for my needs, but from the second I installed Fasterfox I noticed a huge difference in loading times. Let me do a quick test here…

Ok. If you go to Worldofwarcraft.com, you’ll see that there are literally dozens of pictures, along with flash animations as well as animated gifs. It’s the most image intensive homepage I could think of at the time. It took my computer (which is no super computer by any means, above average, but not amazing) a measly 1.594 seconds to load the page. That’s how long it takes me to snap my fingers twice in fast succession.

Say I had a paper to do on…pyramids. I timed how long it took me to go to google, type in pyramids and connect to good ol’ Wikipedia for their take on pyramids. The total time excluding typing? 3.345 seconds. Perhaps I’m overdoing it here, but to me that’s certainly fast.

Sure some of the diehard computer enthusiasts will say “Well duh man, I could do that just by messing with some settings after going up to Firefox’s address bar and typing in ‘about:config’. What’s the big deal?”

So could I, and yeah you could, or you could just take 1 second to download the addon and it does it all for you. In the bottom right corner of the screen after it’s installed it’ll tell you how long it took Fasterfox to direct you to the site (or rather how long it took to load absolutely everything on the page).

Simply put and in conclusion, if you don’t want to have to mess with a lot of settings and if you want faster internet where the addon does all the “behind the scenes” stuff for you, go ahead and pick it up. Their website is right here. The download link is right at the bottom. Well done Fasterfox, thank you.

And again for those who don’t have Firefox yet…seriously, get it.

Tape it of the Internet (A.K.A. TiotI, Over 2,000+ TV shows or 90,000+ episodes)

Streamic (More then 300 real TV channels to choose from including NBC, ABC, ESPN, and BBC1)

ABC (Watch popular shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives, Alias etc online)

PeekVid (Shows can be downloaded)

TV-Video (All the latest TV shows as they aired including 24, Smallville, Prison Break, Lost etc)

TVU Player (TVU is a nifty little player that offers users a variety of channels that can be used to watch normal TV or Sport. US channels are also found on this player.)

Chooseandwatch (It’s a free TV portal where you can watch more than 250 online TV channels. Some of them have to be good.)

Channelking (Channel King provides the best selection of free Internet TV channels. Free broadband TV channels from around the world enable you to watch TV from anywhere with broadband.)
